Send them a link to this website and let them learn for themselves. Many people who have chronic pain have difficulty doing research because their chronic pain interrupts their concentration. You can help them with the research process. You can sit by the computer with them and read for them and discuss the treatment process with them.
They need help and encouragement. Healthy people have a hard time understanding how difficult it is to live with chronic pain. Often chronic pain can trigger emotional states that can be hard to deal with. Many patients are nervous about medical procedures. Go with them to their family doctor and ask about a referral to the pain clinic. Let them know that they have your support in seeking treatment.
Transportation to and from the clinic is key. The administration of certain medications may make the patient unable to drive or travel on their own. Giving the patient a lift is a great help to them in their treatment process.
Some patients have physical impairments that restrict their mobility. It can be of great help to them to have someone who can assist them with their mobility issues as they make their way to and from the clinic. Our clinic has elevators and handicapped parking.
At times, patients may be unable to recall information that is important to their treatment. They can experience loss of memory due to head injuries or other complications. If you were a witness to their original injury and treatment, or witness to their long-term health care treatment, your information can be of great help in determining treatment options.
If the patient is unable to gather their medications or medical records for their appointment, you can help them. This can be very important in cases where a patient has reduced cognitive function due to medical conditions such as brain injury.
Please review the patient side of the website. Medical procedures can seem confusing and complicated. You can let them know what to expect at the clinic and help them prepare for their first visit. If treatment is successful it may improve their ability to work, perform physical activity, and enhance their quality of life.
Sometimes patients require legal help. We may refer the patient to a medical legal clinic if the patient requires legal assistance.
